Yellow Shirts Supporting Local Children
New Title
West Daly Regional Council is pleased to share the story of an initiative delivered by Thamarrurr Youth Indigenous Corporation’s
Yellow Shirts team, supporting children and families in Wadeye through community-led engagement and education. A key focus this year has been the introduction of redesigned veranda programs, creating safe, supportive, and engaging spaces for children who are not currently attending school. The program provides an important pathway for children to reconnect with learning while building confidence, routine, and positive relationships. Led by a predominantly Indigenous workforce, the Yellow Shirts team works closely with families, schools, and community members to encourage school participation and support positive educational outcomes. Through strong local knowledge and ongoing community engagement, the team helps identify barriers to attendance and provides support where it is needed most. By creating opportunities for children to re-engage with education in a culturally supportive environment, the Yellow Shirts program continues to make a meaningful difference for families and the broader Wadeye community.
