Welcome to Our Homelands

Quick Access

What Are Homelands?

Homelands are small, family-based communities located on ancestral lands of deep cultural and spiritual significance.

These areas, also known as outstations, are home to Aboriginal families and clan groups who live in close connection with their Country. Homeland communities vary in size and population, but all share a strong commitment to caring for land, culture, and people.

The West Daly Regional Council is dedicated to improving outcomes for all Aboriginal people and recognises that Homelands are vital to social, cultural, and emotional wellbeing.

What Services Do We Provide?

There are more than 30 Homelands across the West Daly region. Of these, 12 Homelands receive municipal, essential, and housing maintenance services funded through the Council.

Council’s responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining an extensive network of internal roads throughout the region

  • Coordinating the maintenance and upgrade of formed and gravel Homeland access roads

  • Supporting the delivery of essential and community services that help Homelands remain strong and sustainable

Access to Homelands

Access to Homelands is only permitted with the approval of Traditional Owners. This applies to both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people from other clans or regions.

Respect for cultural protocols and permission from Traditional Owners is essential to maintaining the integrity and privacy of these communities.
