The community of
Peppimenarti, often called
“Peppi”, is located on the edge of
Tom Turners Creek within the
Daly River/Port Keats Aboriginal Land Trust.
The community was officially established around
1974, though the area had been known as
Peppimenarti long before European settlement. The name comes from the Aboriginal words
“Peppi” (rock) and
“menarti” (large),
a reference to the striking rock formation that overlooks the community.
Nearby
Emu Point, an outstation approximately
38 kilometres from Peppimenarti, was founded not long after Peppimenarti’s establishment. Many families lived in and around these areas well before formal communities were created.
